Sudan is a state in Saharan Africa bordering the Red Sea to the east, bordering Ethiopia to the east, South Sudan to the south, Chad and the Central African Republic to the west, and to the north it borders the 'Egypt and Libya. The name derives from the Arabic Bilād al-Sūdān, which means “Countries of the Blacks”, as the Arabs called the territories bordering southern Sahara this way. The territory is mostly flat. The north is mainly desert and to the east of the Nile is the Nubian desert while to the west of the same river lies the Libyan desert. To the south, the region known as qoz is rich in sand dunes which in the rainy season are covered by a lush grassy layer and with more abundant water sources than in the northern areas.In addition to the two official languages, Arabic and English, many Sudanese dialects are spoken. Since English became an official language only in 2005, it is not yet completely widespread among the population.Sudan is divided into 17 regions called wilayat.The major urban centers are Khartoum which is the capital of the country, Cassala capital of the homonymous state and Port Sudan which is the main Sudanese port located on the Red Sea.Sudan is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations for diving enthusiasts as it has several diving sites including Wingate (Umbria), Sanganeb, Angarosh, Sha'ab Rumi which are among the most beautiful and unforgettable in the world
